Identity management deals with the identification of individuals in an online system (a network or information system of a corporate). It controls users’ access to resources in that system by implementing restrictions and user rights with established identities. It is an important component of information systems. It is a system which establishes, describes and destroys the identity of an entity. Therefore it is a complete identity life cycle of an object in an electronic business environment.
Different IT professionals took it differently in past but now they consider it management of user credentials. They are necessary when a user logs on to a computerized information system of a business. In IT, identity management is the management of user information. When the information is changed then the information is updated more quickly and efficiently due to this system.
The process of identity management is not simple because it includes a variety of functions. The user information, password resetting and management of lost passwords are some common functions of it. It is common activity of users to forget their passwords. Password resetting is a function of identity management in which passwords of users are changed. It enables them to log on to the information system of the organization.
In these days identity management software programs are being used in networks. These software programs automate the administrative tasks such as password resetting. A user can access resources across the network with the same password through the process of password synchronization. It increases the productivity and security of the system by decreasing the costs.
In broader context W3C developed standards which handle global identity management issues by assigning unique identification to an individual. All the related data is linked to that identity. In identity management lost passwords are recorded. How many times passwords can be changed by the users? Whether a user can keep old password or not? These are some basic requirements due to which the record of old passwords is necessary to keep. IM also controls the workflow of the information system.
Identities are created, managed and deleted in identity management process. When an identity is created then a user is logged on. He can access particular resources in the information system of an organization. A user can use smart card or some traditional way to log on to the system. After providing access, the system allows a user to access personalized settings, content and services available on the system.
Identity management is a system which provides limited control and access level to the users. It prevents users’ unauthorized access of business and confidential information. A user has to pass the authentication process before log on to the system. An IT administrator sets access rights, account profiles, passwords and restrictions on a users’ account. The system of identity management and its implementation is very important in any online information system. An information system having the feature of identity management can use network devices, content, servers, applications and related products efficiently and effectively.
Identity management provides more opportunities to the online businesses. This system not only works on the username, password, authentication and authorization but provides more secure and reliable business environment. It also deals with the facilities and services which a user obtains under various terms and conditions. It provides security and privacy in an information system.
