Business Information By Mast Directory: A Guide To the Produce Business

Whether you enjoy the open land and the possibility of growing foods, or are interested in the manufacturing and sales of produce, there are layers of understanding in the businesses associated with produce. The opportunities available within this, with the trends and needs that are a part of the produce business is one that involves several sectors in understanding growth of food and trends in eating styles.

The produce business is segmented into several categories, dependent on the demands in the market. The first categories include the industry of canned and wholesale produce plus frozen foods. The categories within this are canned foods, breads, oils, cereal, coffee, eggs, frozen fruit and vegetables, frozen meals and tea. On average, this industry brings in $34 million per year, with the average revenue in 2008 growing by 1.9%. The largest market demand was with canned foods, which held an average of 20% of the market .

While these main categories of produce involve most of food and beverages, there are also subdivisions measured with the demands. For instance, the frozen food production industry is involved as a separate industry. On average, this industry brings in a revenue of $26 million per year with an average increase in 2008 by 1.7%. The division in this industry is between specialty foods, which includes about 55% of the market and fruit, juice and vegetables, which involves 45% of the market .

Outside these two industries are also processed foods that take a separate industry. The categories include tea, coffee, pre-prepared meals, yeast, salt, herbs, spices, sauces, salad dressings and flavors offered in the market. Anything that consists of processed materials that move through a procedure from raw materials to processing is a part of this category. This industry alone brings in $6.7 million per year, with the year 2008 seeing an increase in foods by 2.3%. The differences in these is based on the demographics of the time and what is used to prepare and eat different types of meals .

With the vast amount of industries involved in produce and foods and beverages are several basic concepts applied to each area. This typically involves a process from the growth of foods to the selling of foods. Every type of industry includes a connection to either local farms or larger areas of land that can supply massive amounts of food, farmers should create memorandum statements of use of land to plant more.

Each product has their own product to mix.. These elements go through a processing plant which are put into demand through grocery stores or other food arenas. The division between the process involves smaller farm areas that work locally with national and international exchange available for larger companies.

With the process used for foods, are several exchanges in trends taking place with the different types of foods. The canned and processed foods, and fresh foods, are demanding a sense of security and safety with the foods eaten. This means that most are requiring for processes to be available to ensure the foods are clean, safe to eat and don't have any unwanted substances in them. There are also changes with chemical-based foods, with a decline and individuals demanding more natural and organic foods available. The problem with this demand is one that is showing mis-proportions between organically grown food and the demands to have more food available to populations. For instance, the population has increased in one year by 70 million while the production of wheat has decreased by 1%. Finding ways to offer natural trends while increasing production is one that is at the heart of produce and the needs for individuals. The options include more farmers with localized areas that can offer better options for growing produce and selling either processed or natural foods .

The idea of produce and the market of food and beverages consists of layers of demand and need. From the land that could produce specific foods to the processing that is in the highest demand, are noted proportions that are a part of every meal.
